Year 1 2018 - 2019
YEAR 1 Teacher
Welcome to Year 1.
Our class teacher is called Miss Bogert and our teaching assistant is called Mrs Williams.
We hope you have had a wonderful Christmas and wish you a Happy New Year!
We are looking forward to starting our new term and have a lot of learning to do. We will be reading and exploring lots of wonderful stories and producing work based on: The Enormous Turnip, Oliver's Vegetables, Jack and The Beanstalk and The Tale of Peter Rabbit. We are focusing on phase 5 in our phonics sessions - please read as often as possibe at home! During our maths lessons we will be focusing on addition and subtraction within 20, shape and numbers to 50!
Please have a look at Year 1's 'Curriculum Overview' (files to download at the bottom of the page) to find out what we will be learning about over the next 6 weeks.
Every half term Year 1 receive a homework grid. There are a variety of activities to have a go at on the grid. We understand that family life is busy therefore it is not essential that all of these activities are completed, we do ask that your child aims to complete some of the activities to reinforce their learning across the curriculum.
Spellings and Home Reading
Your child's reading book will be changed twice a week (Tuesday and Friday). Please read each book with your child then encourage them to have a go independently, talk about the story with them and ask questions to develop comprehension skills.
Reading at home is incredibly valuable, children who read frequently at home are more likely to progress make the necessary progress required in Year 1. We suggest you read for 10 minutes with your child each night as this is more effective than trying to encourage them to read at length after a tiring day in school.
Spelling Homework - Children receive spellings in their homework books every Friday, please help your child with this piece of homework and encourage them to read the word before having a go at writing it.
